Rodent Pressure in Riverdale

Riverdale is the northwestern corner of the Bronx, overlooking the Hudson River and bordering New Jersey across the river. The neighborhood has a more suburban and affluent character than most of the Bronx, with a mix of large pre-war cooperative apartment buildings on the hill overlooking the river, and semi-detached and detached houses on the streets of the Fieldston section. The Henry Hudson Parkway runs along the riverfront edge.

Van Cortlandt Park to the east provides 1,146 acres of parkland, woodland, and natural terrain that supports Norway rat colonies along its residential margin. Buildings on the streets adjacent to the park's eastern border — Waldo Avenue, Fieldston Road, and Tibbett Avenue — see elevated pressure from the park population. The Riverdale shopping area on Riverdale Avenue and 231st Street has restaurant and food retail that creates local commercial pressure.

The large pre-war co-op buildings in Riverdale — along Independence Avenue, Palisade Avenue, and the numbered cross-streets — have pre-war construction with original basement and utility infrastructure typical of that era. These buildings have the same pipe chase and service corridor entry-point vulnerabilities as the large pre-war co-ops on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
