Rodent Pressure in Pelham Bay

Pelham Bay is the northeastern corner of the Bronx, dominated by Pelham Bay Park — at 2,772 acres, the largest park in New York City. The neighborhood's residential character is postwar: semi-detached and attached brick houses from the 1950s and 1960s on streets like Buhre Avenue, Crosby Avenue, and Stadium Avenue that ring the park's western and southern residential margins. The character is more suburban than the densely urban areas of the South Bronx.

The park's enormous size means the residential margin pressure is significant and consistent. Norway rat colonies in the park's woodland, coastal marsh, and open meadow areas forage outward along every street that abuts the park perimeter. The Hutchinson River runs along the park's eastern boundary, providing additional waterway habitat. The residential blocks on Westchester Avenue, Middletown Road, and Buhre Avenue see the most direct park margin pressure.

The 6 train terminus at Pelham Bay Park station creates underground connectivity, and the commercial activity around the station — restaurant and food retail on the station block — creates local food waste pressure in the immediate vicinity.
