Tottenville is the southernmost neighborhood in New York City — the southernmost point of Staten Island at the Arthur Kill is the southernmost point of the five boroughs. The neighborhood has a deeply suburban and semi-rural character, with large lots, detached houses, mature trees, and proximity to Conference House Park at the southern tip of the island.

Conference House Park's 265 acres of woodland and shoreline along the Arthur Kill provide substantial harborage for deer mice and Norway rats. The park's southern and eastern residential margins — the streets of Tottenville closest to the park — see elevated pressure from the park population. Deer mice are a genuine concern in Tottenville: the wooded character of the neighborhood and the park adjacency create the conditions under which deer mice enter suburban houses, typically through garage-to-house transitions and dryer vent openings.

The Arthur Kill waterfront creates additional shoreline harborage on the neighborhood's western edge. Tottenville's main commercial strip on Main Street and Arthur Kill Road has neighborhood retail and some food service. The low commercial density means Norway rat pressure from food corridors is lower here than in most other neighborhoods in any borough.
