Tribeca — the Triangle Below Canal Street — runs from Canal Street to Chambers Street between Church Street and the Hudson River. The neighborhood's building stock is defined by the cast iron warehouse and commercial buildings of the 19th century that have been converted to high-end loft residences over the past four decades. These buildings, concentrated on streets like Hudson Street, Greenwich Street, Laight Street, and Vestry Street, have large floor plates, heavy timber construction, and original freight elevator shafts that create complex vertical pathways for rodents.

Tribeca's restaurant scene is one of the densest in Manhattan — the blocks around Duane Street, Harrison Street, and Greenwich Street have a concentration of fine dining and upscale food service that generates significant Norway rat pressure. The blocks closest to the Hudson River waterfront are also close to the Hudson River Park, which provides green space cover adjacent to the neighborhood. The Tribeca Film Festival area around the park on the west side creates seasonal concentrations of food vendors and temporary food service.

The building conversion history creates specific rodent vulnerabilities: original warehouse basements were designed for freight access, not residential use, and many have original access points — loading dock thresholds, coal chute openings, original freight cellar doors — that were converted but not always properly sealed. House mice in Tribeca loft buildings often use the original freight elevator shaft infrastructure and the fire stair enclosures to travel between floors.

The neighborhood's proximity to the World Trade Center site means ongoing construction activity in the area, and active construction generates displacement pressure that can push rodent populations into nearby established buildings.
